At least 10,000 earth and timber houses, homes for compulsorily resettled tibetan nomads have collapsed leaving the occupants injured and having to face freezing temperatures in makeshift tents or simply under blankets in the open. The only hospital has been destroyed and access roads buckled and blocked. There is no electricity, water or sewage disposal. The nearest main centre Xining is 530 miles away. The thousands of injured have yet to be adequately treated. 70% of schools have collapsed and the death and injury count is rising daily.
In the immediate aftermath there will be the task of organizing accommodation for the homeless, tending to the wounded and setting programs in place to avoid sickness due to lack of clean water and sanitation.
Amnyi Trulchung Rinpoche's home town of Sershul was violently shaken in the earthquake with minor damage to buildings but no one has been reported hurt. Yushu is close by and many Sershul inhabitants visit. Some are known to have died and others injured.
